We decided to go here today....it was such a wonderful trip. Did you know that "It isn't a castle and Montezuma was never here". But it is a marvel in craftsmanship and ingenuity...the dwelling is 100 feet off the ground....and it was built in the early 1100's CE (Common Era)...it was a 20 room dwelling....created all by hand. We learned that they took yucca leaves and cotton and wove them together to create a strong type rope which they figure that they used to hoist the materials up to the recess.....and people only lived to their early 40's during this time period......John can remember going up into the rooms as a child...they no longer let this happen for several reasons. The dwelling is 90% original with only some mudding being done on the outside after some storm damage.
We also went here as well:
Neither of us had ever been to Montezuma Well....it is fasnicinating or at least to us it was. This well produces 1.5 million gallons of water a day.....it has been explored by several scientists to figure out where the water is coming from and all they can come up with is that it is fed by underwater vents but they have no idea where the water is coming from. This well is a natural sinkhole that is 368 feet wide and 55 feet deep. The water flows through a cave and into a irrigation ditch that was created more than a thousand years ago and was used by the Sinagua people for farming.
Can you see the dwellings built into the side here....they are right above the well. There are many Indian tribes in the area that believe that this water is very sacred and have healing properties as well. It was a very tranquil area - we spent several hours in both places. If you have a chance to enjoy either of these places please take the time to do it.
A great day trip for us and we plan on doing several different areas of our wonderful State in the coming months......
